Itinerary

Please look for your name after clearing customs. Meet and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Istanbul.

We spend the day exploring the treasures of Istanbul, the historic city formerly known as Constantinople. Due to its strategic location astride both Asia and Europe, Istanbul served as the capital of a series of empires since its founding. Our morning discoveries begin in Sultanahmet, a district on Istanbul’s European side filled with palaces, churches, and mosques dating from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. We’ll start at the Blue Mosque, one of the world’s most famous religious buildings. Taking its name from the tens of thousands of shimmering blue iznik tiles decorating its interior, the mosque features a cascade of domes and six minarets that tower over the square and represent the defining symbol of the Istanbul skyline. We visit the ancient Hippodrome with Obelisk of Theodosius, Snake Pillar and German Fountain of Wilhelm II. Byzantine Hippodrome was the heart of Constantinople’s political and sporting life, and the scene of games and riots through 500 years of Ottoman history as well. Our discoveries of Istanbul’s Old City continue with a visit to Hagia Sophia. Completed under Emperor Justinian in AD 537, its magnificent dome remains a true wonder of the Byzantine world. Then, it’s a short walk to Topkapi Palace, another highlight of the city’s glorious past. The complex of grand pavilions and courtyards was built by Mehmet II in the middle of the 15th century (just after his conquest of Constantinople) and served as the residence of Ottoman sultans for the next 400 years. Uncovering the Secrets of Troy & Pergamon

Our private tour of Ephesus and Aphrodisias was transformed by the presence of Archaeologist Aykut. Having an actual expert explain the architectural evolution of the Roman temples brought the ruins to life in a way a standard guide never could. Aykut’s passion for Anatolian history is infectious, and his ability to navigate the crowds so we felt like we had the sites to ourselves was masterful. If you are planning an archaeology tour in Turkey, specifically requesting Aykut is a must!
