Overnight in Istanbul

We meet at 09.00 am in your hotel. We spend the day exploring the treasures of Istanbul, the historic city formerly known as Byzantium and Constantinople. Due to its strategic location astride both Asia and Europe, Istanbul served as the capital of a series of empires since its founding back in the seventh century BC. Our morning discoveries begin in Sultanahmet, a district on Istanbul’s European side filled with palaces, churches, and mosques dating from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. We’ll start at the Blue Mosque, one of the world’s most famous religious buildings. Taking its name from the tens of thousands of shimmering blue iznik tiles decorating its interior, the mosque features a cascade of domes and six minarets that tower over the square and represent the defining symbol of the Istanbul skyline. We visit the ancient Hippodrome with Obelisk of Theodosius, Snake Pillar and German Fountain of Wilhelm II. Byzantine Hippodrome was the heart of Constantinople’s political and sporting life, and the scene of games and riots through 500 years of Ottoman history as well. Our discoveries of Istanbul’s Old City continue with a visit to Hagia Sophia. Completed under Emperor Justinian in AD 537, its magnificent dome remains a true wonder of the Byzantine world. Then, it’s a short walk to Topkapi Palace, another highlight of the city’s glorious past. The complex of grand pavilions and courtyards was built by Mehmet II in the middle of the 15th century (just after his conquest of Constantinople) and served as the residence of Ottoman sultans for the next 400 years. Today, it is one of the world’s richest museums, with a staggering collection of arms, porcelain, and priceless treasures that include the jewel-studded dagger made famous by the Hollywood heist film, Topkapi.

Our recent tour with Aykut was truly exceptional. As both an archaeologist and a guide, Aykut brought a depth of knowledge and passion to every site we visited. His detailed explanations brought ancient ruins and artifacts to life, connecting the history to the broader context of the region in a way that was both engaging and accessible. Aykut’s enthusiasm for archaeology is infectious, and his ability to answer questions—ranging from the basics to more specialized topics—made the experience enriching for everyone in our group. He was attentive to our interests and adapted the tour to ensure we got the most out of every stop. Beyond his expertise, Aykut was organized, friendly, and always willing to go the extra mile to make our journey comfortable and memorable. We left with a much deeper appreciation for the history and culture of the area, thanks to his guidance. I highly recommend Aykut to anyone seeking not just a tour, but a genuine learning experience led by a true expert.
